The Community Christmas Store is a volunteer organization that has been serving residents of Roanoke County, Vinton, Salem and Craig County for over twenty years. In 2013 over 1,060 people from 485 families were able to use the store. All contributions are received from donations made by various organizations, businesses, churches, schools and individuals. Donations and items are collected throughout the year and the store will be open for the use by eligible ‘shoppers’ on December 12th and 13th this year.
Our Lady of Nazareth is one of the many church collection points for specific items that are then taken to the store site in early December so the store can be stocked and ready for shopping on the above dates. We don’t have a store at Our Lady of Nazareth, rather we are one of the many contributors whose generosity allows for the success of the store for those families who live in Roanoke County, Vinton, Salem and Craig County.
We receive many requests for help each year and if you feel you are eligible to ‘shop’ at the Community Christmas Store you can go to the following locations on the dates and times listed below to apply. Persons who qualify should bring proof of income, a social security card for all listed on the application for verification, proof of current residency such as most recent utility bill, copy of a lease, etc. and a listing of clothing sizes for those who reside at the same address who would be eligible shoppers and should be brought with you when you go to one of the following locations to apply.
Dates and places of application:
October 24 - Vinton Senior Center, 820 E. Washington Ave., Vinton 9:00 – 12:00
November 1 – Taylor Masonic Lodge, 1200 Texas St., Salem 9:00 – 12:00
November 15 – Brambleton Center, 3738 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke 9:00 – 12:00
We at OLN will again be collecting laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, diapers and baby wipes. These items can be brought to OLN in mid-November through December 9th so they can be taken to the location of this year’s Community Christmas Store. Like all the donations the store site is also donated so will not know its location till closer to the shopping date.
Families who qualify for the Community Christmas Store are provided a dignified way to ‘shop’ for their family needs for Christmas. Each qualified family member receives new clothing, toys, new household items and food for their family. Families don’t pay for their ‘shopping’ and ‘shopping’ is done in a dignified manner on December 12th and 13th.
We hope OLN members will be as generous as they have been in the past in providing us with the items listed above. In addition if you would like to help stock the store or help with shopping on the 12th or 13th or want further information on making donations to the ‘store’ please contact Linda Crowley at 540-769-2166 for more information. We look forward to your generosity once we place the collection box in the commons in mid-November.
