The History of OLN:
In 1914, when the City of Roanoke was only thirty years old, the Bishop of Richmond sent Father James Gilsenan to serve as Assistant at St. Andrew's and to begin a new parish in the southwest part of the city.

Fr Gilsenan was born in 1877 in Lurgan, County Cavan, Ireland, the son of James Gilsenan and Mary Bradley Gilsenan. He was ordained in 1904.

The Catholic population of Roanoke was growing. In 1915, Father Gilsenan purchased a beautiful property on Campbell Avenue. It included a magnificent brick building which became a convent for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, and also a two-story frame building which served as a school, staffed by the sisters. The school opened in 1916, with eight grades, and added a grade each year until there was a complete high school department. During the next fifty-six years, Nazareth School enrolled over 11,000 students.

The sisters' chapel was the focus of religious life until 1918. At that time, the lumber salvaged from the razing of the little wooden school at the foot of St. Andrew's hill was used to construct a hall on the Campbell Avenue property. On the Sunday preceding Christmas, 1918, public Mass was celebrated there for the first time. This building is the present St. Francis House.

Bishop Dennis J. O'Connell visited the hall on February 16, 1919, and announced the name of the new parish: Our Lady of Nazareth. At that time there was no other church by that name in the United States.

Within six years, the cornerstone was laid for a new building, which was completed in 1926. When Father Gilsenan dedicated the church, his major goals were realized, but there were many years of debt and struggle ahead. During these years, Father Gilsenan made an indelible mark on the community, winning the affection not only of the parishioners, but the respect of the civic community for his participation in the life of the city and for his work with youth. He was named a Monsignor in 1940. Msgr. Gilsenan died on September 12, 1953. His requiem was sung at Nazareth and he is buried in St. Andrew's Cemetery.

Father Robert F. Beattie was the second pastor of Nazareth. He made extensive improvements to the property and, looking toward the future, purchased the first land for a new church.

The last mass at the old church was celebrated on July 9th, 1978 and the new church on Route 419 was dedicated by Bishop Sullivan that same afternoon.

It was with the help of a legacy from Miss Anita Obermeyer in the amount of $450,000 that the present facility on Electric Road (Route 419) was built.

On June 25th, 1989 the Christian Life Center was dedicated in memory of Miss Anna Louise Haley (1910 - 1988).

Nazareth has undergone many changes over the years, reflecting change in the Church and the world. Old organizations have given way to new as we have sought to express our faith and respond to the needs of our time. Parishioner involvement has been a hallmark of Nazareth throughout our history.

OLN/Roanoke Catholic scrip Program

Roanoke Catholic School with the church’s help has a Kroger Care and SCRIP program. This allows you to help with parish efforts as well as make Catholic Education more affordable.

What is it?

A way for you to budget your normal shopping patterns to grocery stores, department stores, restaurants, hotels, airlines, gas stations and much more, while creating a parish effort fund and catholic tuition help fund.

How it works?

There are two programs. First is the Kroger’s Care program which is a one time purchase of a Kroger’s gift card for $5.00. You in return receive a gift card for Kroger’s valued at $5.00. Then on future shopping trips you reload your card for any value amount using credit, cash or check. Then, when you make a purchase you use this gift card to pay for your gas or groceries.

The other program is SCRIP. This program is a gift card program. You purchase gift cards to department stores, fast food and sit down restaurants, hotels, airlines, gas stations, home improvement stores, out of state grocery stores and many other retailers. Here you purchase gift cards at face value with cash or check. You in return have a gift card to that store, restaurant, gas station etc. at the given value. That card can be used immediately as a gift or purchase. The only difference is that it can not be reloaded where we get the credit.

How does the church and school make a profit?

Kroger’s has a number on the back of each card that is linked to our church. Each time you reload that card we get a 5% credit for the amount reloaded. This is split 50/50 with the church and the school.

With the other retail stores the percentages vary between 1.5% and 40% of the card value. It too is split 50/50 on the profit.

How often do you get paid?

The check is given to the school and the church on a quarterly basis.

How often can one purchase gift cards?

Gift cards can be purchased on a weekly basis via Cathy Connelly 265-5437. Or on a monthly basis at the scrip table in the Fellowship Hall. During holidays volunteers will be at the table weekly to take orders or sell what is on hand.

Why should I help?

It is an easy way for you to help support our parish efforts and make Catholic Education more affordable without costing you any money. It just takes a little time to budget.

How can it help me if I want my child to receive tuition help?

If you want to send your child to Roanoke Catholic, you would fill out an enrollment form listing your child’s name as a future Celtic. You would in return receive and 80/20 split. Your Kroger’s card would be linked to your family and any gift card purchases would be linked to your family’s name. So all funds would come directly off of your child’s tuition or be set up for all funds to be applied to future enrollment. If you have any questions call Cathy Connelly 265-5437.

What if my child is not school age and I am considering RCS?

Sign up now as a future Celtic and have your Kroger’s card linked and all purchases being made go into your fund. If you decide to send them to Roanoke Catholic you already have an account with some money to be used for your child’s tuition. If you decide not to send them you can donate that money to the tuition assistance fund that will be used for other families in the school to reduce tuition.
